Purchase: I purchased a low withered, flat backed, hard to fit gelding which none of my saddles fit. They were all too narrow in the gullet and the bars. After acquiring numerous assembly line saddles in an attempt to fit him and researching saddle fit and saddle quality, I finally resigned myself to having a semicustom quality saddle made for my horse and myself. After much research, I found the Dry Fork Saddle Company, makers of the famed McCall Saddle. I could not find a bad review on a McCall saddle so I made a phone call and spoke with one of the McCall owners himself. He walked me through the entire saddle making process, I sent in drawing templates and pictures of my horse, had a custom made tree, special tooling they don't even offer, fenders set back a bit, picked out the conchos, seating and dye and the total with shipping came to $3200.
Likes: The saddle is to die for and fits my horse like a dream. His gaits are so much smoother, slower and his head is low. No more dry spots behind the shoulder. This saddle will be passed down through the generations. I know it will definitely outlast me and my horse. This is top quality stuff!!
Dislikes: Nothing. I purchased one of their lightest weight trail saddles but the working cowhorse saddles are a bit on the heavy side.
Quality: The McCall saddle is top quality from start to finish. The trees are made to you and your horses specs. All wood trees, bull hide wrapped, top quality leather, the craftsmanship is fantastic. I asked for a tooling they didn't even offer and it came out beautiful. The Summit is a lighter weight trail saddle but is constructed with a slimmed down version of their famous Lady Wade Tree.
Summary: You get what you pay for. This saddle is top quality and will be passed down thru the generations some day. It is a beautiful piece of artwork that epitomizes western culture yet is a handy, sensible working saddle. The Lady Wade tree with quarter horse bars will fit a large variety of horses.
