Dixieland Gaited Saddles
16" flex tree w/ butterfly skirt
Manufacturer: Dixieland Gaited Saddles
Model: 16" flex tree w/ butterfly skirt
Category: Trail Saddles
Purchase: After lengthy local and online searches, I determined that Dixieland had the best product at my price point. I first ordered the fit forms when my gelding was 4, then determined I needed to wait a year before ordering (which turned out well). Cynthia was very understanding, and gave me a credit the following year when I ordered the forms again. I settled on a 16" western design that was in stock, and paid $1233 with the rear cinch and shipping.
Likes: The saddle was an exact fit for both of us from the start. My horse is a TWH/MFT cross, and he had been having problems gaiting correctly, due to pinching at the gullet. He has been so much better with the new saddle! The extra flare in the tree is wonderful. I've even been able to ride a much larger MFT with this saddle, and it fit him, too! The padded trail stirrups felt funny at first, but after a long mountain ride, I was won over. It's well made, supple, and the felt underneath is a nice switch from the usual fleece. Also, the butterfly skirt gives a wonderful close contact feel, I would really recommend it!
Dislikes: Umm. . . it squeaks? Nothing talcum powder doesn't fix. Nothing else comes to mind.
Quality: This is a nicely made saddle, good quality leather and hardware. I really like the extra rings and loops, very handy. Even the latigo (I did trim it shorter) is a very nice leather.
Summary: I wanted nearly exactly the same model as one that was available on the floor. The difference was seat size - I have always ridden in a 14"-15" seat, and the floor model was a 16". After talking with Cynthia, I decided that it would work out fine, and it has. Compared to a similar Circle Y model, the seat feels more like a 15.5". It puts me just in the right position, and I don't feel that it's the wrong size. Overall, I love having this saddle, and will buy one again from Dixieland if the opportunity presents itself!
