Manufacturer: Marcel Toulouse (View all products by Marcel Toulouse)

Model: Jennine Platinum Genesis (View all Jennine Platinum Genesis reviews)

Category: Jumping Saddles

Purchase: I purchased the saddle at The Tacky Shop, Beavercreek, OH. Paid $1700, which included a pair of 54" Toulouse calfskin covered, non-stretch leathers. I also received 10% off irons and girth.

Likes: The Genesis tree is pure genius. It takes seconds to make an adjustment by merely lifting a velcro flap on the underside of the tree near the head, loosening two set screws with the provided hex key, and turning the adjusting wheel with the provided tool or similar (pin punch). You are not limited to set sizes like you are with the typical changable gullet plates. I also like the calfskin that covers the entire saddle. It is supple and sticky beyond belief, although it does scratch a bit easier than a tougher leather. The flaps are calfskin stitched and glued to a stiffer leather. The seat and panels are all calfskin. The Toulouse Platinum series are wool flocked. I had a fitter adjust the flocking and tree to fit a leased horse and she remarked very favorably at the quality of the flocking and panels in particular and the overall quality of the saddle. She is a rep for Albion saddles and after looking over mine is considering adding at least some Toulouse models to her inventory. Once fitted correctly to a horse, the Jennine puts me in a rock solid position both on the flat and over fences. Posting the trot and assuming a two point position is extremely easy and effortless when the saddle balances you correctly.

Dislikes: The billets could be one to two inches longer. Some have commented on the stiffness of Toulouse billets in general, and while I agree that they are stiff when new, I disagree that such is undesirable. They will soften with use and some oiling. I would not go crazy over-oiling the billets as that would lead to premature stretching.

Quality: See above.

Summary: I consider the current (2012) quality of Toulouse saddles (made in Argentina by Cueros Santa Cruz) to be more than suitable for the price paid. The Genesis tree is one of the best ideas I have seen in a long time.
