Purchase: Gift subscription at Equine Affaire in Springfield, MA two years ago. This was my 2nd "try" for this publication...
Cover price is $3.50 for a two-month issue, $30 US yearly subscription.
Likes: "The Trail Rider" recently changed hands a couple of years ago. I had an earlier subscription in the mid-90's, but let it slide because the editing WASN'T, and most of the articles were poorly written and juvenile. This NEW, improved, re-vamped publication is FANTASTIC! I am very glad I accepted my friend's gift (it was a "sign-up, get a free subscription for a friend" promotion).
The overall appearance of the magazine is much more finished and professional, glossy photos, well-organized, well edited. They (still) welcome reader submissions and come across as a very friendly, informative, open, and knowledgable source.
Great articles from all over the country, breed features each issue, regular columnists, good advertisers. LOTS of photos and useful articles on medical/emergency topics, travelling, and reviews on ranches and campgrounds.
Dislikes: I wish it came out monthly!
Quality: Packed with information, photos, nicely edited and presented. Timely delivery.
Summary: Successful, impressive re-do of what had been a pretty basic (okay, but remedial) and cheap-looking magazine that was notoriously LATE.
