Purchase: I found this blanket on clearance through Valley Vet Supply for $189 plus shipping. I bought it because it was advertised to be made of ballistic nylon and the Weatherbeeta cut and freestyle system seems to be the best fit for my wide gelding.
Likes: I was relieved that Weatherbeeta seems to have returned to using more durable materials for their blankets. This one has already endured teeth marks from other horses, rolling and rubbing against fence posts without ripping. I love that it has a detachable neck cover and also the "comfort cuff" at the neck is very nice. I love the freestyle system which is about the only system that prevents rubs on this particular horse. I love the wrap around tail flap and the generous cut.
Dislikes: I would prefer bias surcingles to the belly warmer-with surcingles, but this is a very minor issue. I would like velcro at the chest closure but to be honest - it has buckles and clips so that you can get the perfect adjustment at the chest and I've had no problems with gaping.
The neck cover came with straps that were way too long; I had to cut them down and re-sew them. Also - the velcro strips that secure the neck cover to the blanket are very very strong - almost too strong, it is a little hard to peel the velcro apart, but at least you know it's not going to come undone. . .
Quality: This blanket is advertised as being made of ballistic nylon with a tight weave and so far it appears that this is true. The blanket has 400 grams of insulation, so should be perfect for keeping my clipped horse warm. The construction seems more in keeping with the way Weatherbeeta originally made blankets so I expect it will last me a long time.
Summary: Thank you Weatherbeeta for returning to more quality construction. I believe that when made with ballistic nylon, your design is far superior to the Rambos with better fit and features at a more reasonable price.
