Purchase: Our carriage club recently adopted the FEI rule requiring helmets for all competitions. Initially, there was resistance from some members to the helmet requirement until it was revealed that in addition to head protection the use of helmets also provides a layer of liability protection to the club and individual members named in a personal injury law suit. In addition to CDE events The club does occasionally offer carriage rides to the public. We decided that the club needed to purchase helmets to provide to the public in order to continue with the rides. We needed a helmet that would meet ASTM safety standards without breaking our treasury. Horse.com sells the helmet for $23.75 ea if six or more helmets are purchased
Likes: In addition to the helmets being affordable they are fashionable and light in weight, weighing less than a pound. The helmet comes in several different colors which is great for children. The helmets had to be adjustable.Turning a dial to adjust the headband size is quick and convenient.
Dislikes: The helmets received good reviews from people who have bought them. One complaint is that if the adjustment dial is turned too tight the dial will break but that is a universal problem with any DFS system. A club member always properly fits the helmet to the person wearing the helmet so we do not have a problem with over dialing. The other universal problem is that any riding helmet is a one impact helmet. If there is an impact the helmet should be discarded.
Quality: The quality is comparable to other helmets in the same price range. The shell is of a thin resilient plastic. Most of the protection comes from the closed cell liner which is pretty much standard. There is very little difference in the impact protection between a
$24 helmet and a $500 helmet. Helmets with foam pad adjustment inserts are more comfortable but it's not convenient or quick to alter the size. Expensive helmets are more fashionable but even that is negligible.
Summary: The Equi-Lite helmet meets ASTM safety standards. It's light. It looks good. It comes in several different colors. It is convenient to adjust the size. It perfectly meets our club's needs.
