Purchase: I bought this saddle to replace an oldie but goodie I currently ride in. We ride TWH so I thought I would try out a gaited horse saddle. I found it at horse.com for $770, it was the only place I could find a 15" gaited saddle. Was supposed to be built on a Ralide tree.

Likes: The style of saddle is along the lines of what I like. I like round skirts, but they were still big enough I felt that it would help support heavy saddlebags on long trail rides. The stitching was pretty straight. The leather was thick.

Dislikes: They advertised that they sold a 15" seat, however, when it arrived the saddle hadn't been built on a 15" tree, but on at least a 16", possibly even 17" tree. It had been stuffed with foam to try to reduce the seat size. At the back of the seat the padding was over two inches thick (with the Cheyenne roll the back of the seat was 4" wide) and where the jockeys are sewn to the seat the padding stuck STRAIGHT up over an inch. Th padding was not cut to where it gradually built up, but it was cut straight up and down, and you could see it under the seat leather. The curve of the back of the seat that helps support your pelvis and lower back was almost completely flatted out from all the padding. The back of the seat (like looking at the saddle from behind) was curved like it should have been though, so it added to the "funny" look. It looked like you wouldn't have been able to sit IN the saddle, but rather atop the saddle. The seat leather was pretty thin, and I am sure after time when all that foam lost some density the leather would have been saggy and loose. The seat looked ridiculous. I have NEVER seen a saddle with as much padding built into the seat.

Quality: The leather was thick, a bit stiff, but would have been ok with use and oil. However, only one side of the leather had been tanned...? So I don't know what kind of quality the tanning is, or how it would hold up under use(if the color would rub off etc). The stitching and tooling on the visible portions were straight, even and looked decent. The leather they used had more scars in it then I have noticed in other saddles. The leather was thick, a bit stiff, but would have been ok with use and oil. However, only one side of the leather had been tanned. So I don't know what kind of quality the tanning is, or how it would hold up under use(if the color would rub off or show excessive wear etc). There were some marks embossed into the leather, under the jockey from a sewing machine probably, but if someone was sitting in it it would have been covered.

Summary: I am going to try to return this saddle. I was incredibly disappointed in it. I don't feel like it was truly a 15" saddle (made on a 15" tree). I believe that after time the foam would have lost density, making it a 16" saddle (or whatever tree it was made on) and making the seat leather loose and saggy (which that is just speculation, but I feel like it is common sense). I now know Ralide doesn't make a 15" gaited tree, so I guess it's partly my fault for not researching it enough before buying. I think if I could ride in a 16" saddle, and it wasn't padded out the whazoo, it might have made an alright saddle. No circle y, but not everyone can afford something that nice.....
