Purchase: I bought my Sliester over 25 years ago for $80. I got an 8 1/2" S-shank,low port bit with a roller. I've used this bit on my spirited TB/QH I rode over 20 years,and a Foxtrotter for 10 years, and I rode 1000 miles a year.
The S-Shank kept them from mouthing the shank, the roller gave release from nervousness, like chewing gum, and shank gave me control when I needed it. It looked like a show piece, good enough for parades, yet a serviceable cowboy bit. I debated over the cost, but sprung for it, the best thing I ever did.
Likes: You can't discount the beautiful quality of a bit that always comes back, shines up and looks great, especially with that nice shank connector looks like a show bit.Others have admired its serviceable good looks.Always has polished up bright, with no rust.
It is so balanced, encouraged my horse to break at the poll and come straight up in the bridle,to yeild.
You may not always need so much shank but the power is there when you need it, from racing on the beach, to parades, rodeos, to mountains. I had control when a bear crossed our path!
Dislikes: I can't find anything I don't like about the unit.
Quality: Bright stainless steel constructed well at the mouth ends, no pinch, nice shank bar, with non rust s/s rings for the reins. Even though the bit has been chewed and mouthed, filled with green junk, rubbed on old bark trees, quality always stays and comes back bright.
Summary: It is hard to find a used one; people hang onto them. The pro-rated cost over 20 years and 20,000 miles can't be beat.
I had thought that Sliester would replace the mouthpiece if you wanted to change it.
