Purchase: I purchased these stirrups with leathers on ebay from "cotswoldsport." I believe I paid about $284 for them. I had been researching a solution to my knee pain and needle-toes while riding and found K'Vall.
Likes: I researched these stirrups extensively because they DO indeed look like they could get you into trouble if thrown from the saddle. However, everything I read indicated they were safe. I must say, I adore these stirrups. Once I got them adjusted correctly, I felt so comfortable and secure. Long trail rides were comfortable again, with no knee pain and no sleepy toes, as weight is distributed over the entire foot, not just the ball of the foot. Luckily, I haven't taken a fall from these, but KVall states that the toe cage keeps the foot from sliding forward and the pin in the back of the platform pops out if pressure is put on the side rear straps.
Dislikes: These stirrups are difficult to find and they are expensive. Before I covered the strap with sheepskin, the buckle marked up my dressage saddle (I might have omitted a buckle cover for those first few rides - my fault.) Lastly, they arent exactly streamlined looking.
Quality: Very good quality. The leather is very soft and nice and the stirrups seem strong and well made.
Summary: When people see these they think they are a death trap. People poo-poo them and say, "just learn to ride," but it has nothing to do with that. Google all the European riders that use these. If you have knee pain and needle-toes, I recommend these stirrups. Endurance riders would love these! I am surprised I dont see American endurance riders using K'Vall. I enjoy jumping logs on trail rides, and feel more secure with these. They are very well-designed and make for a more comfortable ride. I haven't used regular irons since I bought these and probably never will again.
