Category: English Saddle Fittings/Pads
Purchase: Bought used, locally, still in great shape, for $135. Mine is 1/2" thick, natural wool color, dressage cut. I wanted it for my dressage horse because my other horse has an all purpose one and she seems to love it. I like natural materials against my horse, a contoured top line, and thickness under my saddle which becomes a bit large certain times of year.
Likes: I love the natural wool material and density of this pad. It doesn't compress and maintains the balance of my saddle. My horse gets fatter during grass season and my saddle is fit to that and therefore needs padding other times of the year. The 1/2" thickness is perfect for that. Prior to this pad I had a shim-able pad that was a pain to put the shims in and out. This pad does not slip and slide at all. The contour helps get it centered when saddling. The sides are a bit short for my saddle and I can barely get a billet in the leather keeper, but if I couldn't, it wouldn't matter because my saddle does not move on this pad. A little soil adds character to these pads and it is easy enough to brush off loose hair on the underside during shedding season.. I use a rubber brush to loosen and then a flick brush.
Dislikes: It is a funny shape. It is long front to back for my 17 inch saddle, and seems short side to side for my normal length flaps. It's a schooling pad so it doesn't matter to me but I think it would be more popular if they'd rework the cut.
Quality: High end construction. The middle seam is covered with pretty black leather and the seam itself is sewn well. The billet holders are fixed and made out of the same nice black leather. The contoured top line is perfect for my horse'518s shape. The wool felt is substantial, dense and high quality. It does not compress.
Summary: This is the best schooling pad for my needs. I won't go back to anything else, except for the times it makes my saddle tight. For those times I use sheepskin.
