Category: Trail Saddles

Purchase: We purchased our first Alabama trail gaitor trail saddle for my paso fino to use for trail riding and my husband liked mine so well that we ordered a second one for his paso fino cross gelding one week later. Both were purchased for $1400.00 each. The first one was ordered online and the second through a local saddle retailer.

Likes: The Alabama trail gaitor has a very comfortable seat and the stirrup leathers are soft and supple. They place the rider in a centered close contact position.

Dislikes: Although this is a very comfortable saddle I also found that they are not suitable for riding in hills. Both saddles purchased have slipped forward over on both horses withers onto thier necks going downhill on two seperate occasions. My husbands horse is nearly 16hh weighing 1250 pounds and mine is 14.2hh weighing 900 pounds. They were cross rigged correctly and fully tightened. This has never happened before with any other saddles we have ridden. My accident landed me skidding down hill on a flat rock surface and I was left with permanent scars on my elbow. We have added cruppers to both saddles and the horses seem to have adjusted to wearing them. I still don't have full confidence that the saddle will not slip again. Both horses are build differently, my husbands horse has high withers and mine more rounded and flat. This brand does not seem to fit either horse well. We have tried to compensate the seemingly too wide tree with expensive, thicker contoured saddle pads. The stirrups that came with the saddle are comfortable but I have had issues getting my foot out of the wider stirrup grip and have been nervous that my foot was not sliding easily out of the stirrup when dismounting. Normally this would not be an issues for a horse that stands perfectly still for dismounting.

Quality: The saddle is well made and attractive.

Summary: This saddle is great for flat work and both of our horses feel more collected and seem to be gaiting smoother. I would not recommend this type of saddle for Pasos or for any mountain regions or steep hills.
