Purchase: I was fit for these boots by a local dealer and paid approximately $1200.
Likes: The boots fit perfectly upon arrival and were very quick to break in. They are comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
Dislikes: I have had problems with both zippers in that the fastener at the bottom of the zipper where they meet the boots has sprung open repeatedly for no apparent reason. In the right boot, this happened during a fox hunt and left me with a sizable, bloody hole on my heel that took weeks to heal. I spoke with Der Dau to get it repaired and they indicated it would be easier to take it to a local cobbler--which I did. The next week, the other side of that fastener did the same thing. I took it back and they pounded both flat into the heel of the boot.
Yesterday, the fasteners sprung on the left boot, causing the zipper to split from the bottom up. I took it to the same cobbler, who is going to remove it all together and replace it with heavy-duty stitching.
These boots are coming up on three years old, but the first zipper-related issue happened in the first 6 months of using them.
Quality: The boots are beautiful and fit very well, but I have my doubts about how well they will hold up to the rigors of fox hunting as a primary discipline. The leather is buttery soft (even fully lined) and I am sure they would last in a show ring...but I made it clear that the boots were to be hunting boots and asked for sturdy leather when I had them made. It is undoubtedly quality leather, but if this is the sturdy stuff, I'd hate to see the other!
Summary: This is my second pair of Der Daus. I have a pair of field boots that are five years older and have never had a problem with them re: zippers . They are also made of a stiffer leather. Overall, I think the quality of workmanship has gone down over the years while the prices have increased dramatically--which is why I sought a new company for a new pair of schooling boots. I would not buy another pair of DDs.
