Purchase: I bought the saddle used off of ebay for $575. It runs about $690 new. I had been looking at the saddles on the Sycamore Creek website for my hard-to-fit, short-backed paso fino. The new prices are very reasonable for a saddle you can custom-order but I was on a tight budget and wanted to buy one cheaper.
Likes: The saddle is wonderful! Very well-padded seat and also under the bars of the saddle. The cushioned underside helps fill in any gap between the saddle and the horse's back. The center-fire rigging pulls the tree level as the horse is girthed up. This model is hornless, which makes it safer, though I do miss the convenience of being able to carry a horn bag. Love the light weight!
Dislikes: Swapping out the western fenders is tricky. I liked the fenders okay but wanted to lighten the saddle's weight even more by replacing them with English leathers and stirrups. I learned the hard way not to pull out the fenders and then try to feed the English leathers over the saddle bars. You have to lace the new leather to the existing fender so that you pull the leather over the bar as you pull the fender out. As with western and trail saddles in general, this saddle does not have an emergency release for the fenders if a rider gets hung in the stirrup. For this reason, I use peacock stirrups on the English leathers.
Quality: Very good leather and stitching. This saddle will hold up under hard use for many years.
Summary: Even though I did not buy this saddle from Sycamore Creek, Tony Pritchett spent a lot of time on the phone with me when I called to find out how to get the English leathers on the saddle after I pulled out the fenders. He treated me as though I were a personal customer. Great guy! The prices for the new saddles are very reasonable for the quality and being able to pick your saddle style, leather colors, trim, fender style, etc. I highly recommend this company for anyone trying to fit a saddle to their paso fino.
