Purchase: My parents purchased this pad for me at SmartPak for $200. I never could have afforded it otherwise. I had mentioned to my mom that I was having trouble with a new horse I had gotten, and I thought the Ogilvy might help. The horse is a Haflinger, formerly Amish-worked, and very, very crooked from pulling weight. The saddle I have "fits"-- but no matter how well a saddle fits her every other way, no saddle will ever fit properly as long as she's so crooked. I also have a bad back myself, and having to ride in the middle while fighting my saddle sliding off the side was difficult. It wasn't a good combo!
Likes: This pad is so well made, nice to hold and to use. It's beautiful, really. And it solved my problem from the very first use. My saddle used to slip to the left at the pommel and the right at the cantle, even while lunging or leading; now it doesn't slip at all, I can ride balanced, and my horse can lift her back and lower her head. Now that we can work properly, we can work out the crookedness. I have zero back pain, too-- it's very cushioned. And even with no straps, this pad does not move. I also found a pressure study through another high-end pad brand, and the Ogilvy performed very, very well. It came in second to the more expensive pad they were advertising (the name of which escapes me now). See if you can find that pressure study via Google. It's reassuring that science backs up that this is more than just a pretty pad.
Dislikes: My girth is too short now because the pad makes the saddle sit up so high! Once I'm able to get it tightened, it's fine.
Quality: It's very well made. I was so impressed that I ordered an Ogilvy baby pad to use with it (but it hasn't come in just yet).
Summary: I'm so glad this pad fixed my problem, and it did so without making my saddle any narrower. I don't think it wouldn't be needed if you've got a horse with a great back and a custom saddle. But if you're having an issue like mine, and your horse needs some gaps filled in, I recommend trying it!
