Purchase: I purchased this saddle from Smartpak for $900 new. I was able to do a test-ride through Smartpak with the same saddle but a 17 1/2 seat size. I returned the trial saddle and purchased the same in a 17".
Likes: My favorite thing about this saddle is how adjustable it is. I have owned three horses since I purchased this saddle, one went in a medium tree, one a medium wide, and one a wide. My fitter was able to make this fit all three perfectly. Not only is the gullet adjustable, but you can swap around the billet straps with ease. This also makes it easier and less expensive to replace them if one goes bad. The best thing is that this saddle is wool-flocked. To my my knowledge, this is the only wool-flocked saddle that is partially synthetic and in this price range. The saddle is light, and I really like that. It puts you in a nice position and lets you feel secure without feeling locked in. I have a bad back, and this is one of the few saddles that doesn't cause me problems. Overall it's an excellent saddle. I need a larger seat size and I am not even considering a different brand or model, I'm getting the same exact thing in a larger size.
Dislikes: The only thing I don't like is the material used on the bottom of the panels. I think it'd be worth it to make that part leather rather than synthetic. It's held up better than I anticipated but I think that's where the breakdown will eventually be.
Quality: The quality is excellent. Thorowgood saddles are the same as the pricier Kent & Masters saddles, and both are made by Fairfax. Just shy of five years of daily use and my saddle looks hardly used. The seat and knee rolls are leather, and it's a good quality, durable leather. The synthetic material used on the other parts is not as cheap-looking as other synthetic saddles. I recently did a side-by-side comparison to a full-leather Kent & Masters, which is the exact same saddle except those are full leather and the quality is definitely on par with the more expensive brand. I get compliments on the saddle frequently, and people have no idea it's partially synthetic!
Summary: This is a comfortable, attractive, affordable, adjustable, wool-flocked saddle. It is an excellent value, and if you're considering something in a lower price range, I'd consider a new model of this saddle before used models of more expensive brands.
