Purchase: A friend of mine had this saddle in her tack room and she wasn't using it, she gave it to me as a gift with a set of matching shims and velcro panels.
Likes: Although old, the leather, the seat, the fenders and the billets were in very good shape. The seat seemed a little bit wide, but after a few minutes of riding, the feeling disappeared and I had no hip pain afterwards.
The horse was happy, relaxed and supple in it, but only in the configuration described below.
Dislikes: When I scratched the panels on the tree, whatever the position, it created a pinching angle at the top of the bars and it gave the twist a weird too pronounced rock that wouldn't fit at all. Any further shimming would worsen the fit. I ended up using the saddle with neither Specialized panels or shims, but bare and combined with a shimmed Len Brown Corrector pad. In that configuration, we obtained the right twist, rock and no pinching at the fork.
Quality: Simple solid lasting concept. The exposed tree seems of good quality. The use of staples on the tree to hold the velcro is a poor cheap idea, though. The billets seem strangely elastic, but are solid.
Summary: Good concept idea to have versatile adapting to the horse's conformation. However, the panels create an angle at the bottom of the fork which would pinch any horse, whatever the conformation or the placement. Lots of trees are misconceived that way, hopefully the tree used on this Specialized saddle has a slick fork to start with, so using it bare over a carefully shimmed pad does the trick for comfortable rides.
