Purchase: Trinity Tack, around $900, online. I was looking for a good all purpose saddle, mainly for arena / lessons / trail. I wanted a saddle with a Steele tree in it.
Likes: Very nicely made. Seat is well-balanced and not excessively padded. The Steele equi-flex tree works beautifully on my stocky QH. Skirt is cut back and there is very good 'feel' and contact. Rigging is also set slightly back, which frees up the shoulder. Horse seems to like the saddle.
As a bonus, it is a very pretty saddle but not excessively showy. This means I don't have to spend a lot of time polishing silver. This saddle has a minimum of tooling on it - again, very nice in that I don't have to spend hours chasing dust out of every little crevice. However, the smooth leather also shows scratches easily; if that bothers you, then go for more tooling. Even with the scars it's already acquired, I find they can be rubbed out easily enough with leather dressing, and you could take the saddle into a show ring with pride.
Dislikes: Very heavy, even for a Western saddle. However, this also translates into stability, and the saddle spreads load very evenly when I look at sweat marks. This model also comes with a suede-finish seat. I would have preferred a smoothout seat, but it's not a big deal. The suede gives some grip but not too much.
Quality: Good solid heavy duty saddle. Entirely comparable to the Crates saddles, I think, but at a lower cost. This tack shop had an unusually good deal on the Continental saddles.
Summary: I would definitely look at Continental Saddlery's work if you are in search of a mid-range solid Western saddle.
