Purchase: My first saddle was a Passier Grand Gilbert plain jane (no deep seat, no gusseted panels) that I bought used. After a couple of years I decided I wanted to splurge on a new saddle. I tried every major brand available and ended up purchasing an Optimum. It was the only saddle besides the deep seat G.G. that fit me perfectly. The Optimum feels like it was custom made for me, and the leather is soooo soft. I traded my old G.G. in for $850 off the $2750 price the Optimum cost me at Rick's Heritage in PA.
Likes: Out of every major brand available, the Optimum is the only model besides the G.G. that fit me perfectly. Fortunately it is also adjustable to fit most any horse. I have a high withered Thoroughbred, and I had to send the saddle off to the authorized repairman to have the tree narrowed just a bit. Not something I wanted to do with a brand new saddle, but I have to keep my boy happy.
Since I had to send the saddle to be narrowed, the Passier-authorized repairman knew exactly what to do with it based off my photos and whither tracings I sent him. When I spoke with him regarding his work, he said he knew exactly what I wanted with just the photos and drawings I included. Definitely someone that knows his business.
Dislikes: The fact that the narrowest tree available is a medium is not something I liked, but since the tree can be narrowed, I can live with this. I can't say I like the price, but you definitely get what you pay for with a Passier.
Quality: Simply the best. I couldn't find a better saddle out there except for the custom made ones, and even those aren't necessarily better.
Summary: When I traded my G.G. in for the Optimum, the saleswoman was very happy with the condition of the G.G. even though I rode it practically everyday. So I know the Optimum will give me and my horse many years of service. Even when I get another horse, I know I can have this saddle adjusted to fit him.
