Purchase: I purchased this 16" roper from a saddle shop here in my home town. I paid $1000.00 which was the cheapest price I could find for this saddle. Figured my Husband would use it when he rides every "Once In A Blue Moon".
Likes: Very Eye-Catching design. Has a very flashy swirl pattern with a basket weave design in the center. This tooling repeats itself over the entire saddle. Rawhide accents on the gullet and the cantle. Not overly-heavy for a roping saddle. Nice light -oil color.
Dislikes: Came with extremely cheesy conchos. Seemed like painted silver plastic. I switched them out immediately. Stirrup leathers have been very hard to break in and turn. Synthetic sheepskin lining is very cheap and pulls out easily. Not the most comfy saddle I own.
Quality: Saddlesmith bought out Ammerman brand saddles. Ammerman built a great saddle and Saddlesmith builds a cheaper made, mass produced saddle. This saddle was built by Saddlesmith using a Ammerman design. Because of this the saddle is only medium quality in construction.
Summary: I have owned a few older, well made saddles by Saddlesmith. Unfortunately Saddlesmith is building very bad saddles and mass producing them lately. For a pleasure saddle or an every day schooling saddle, this one works just fine. But I think this will be the last Saddlesmith saddle I ever buy. Anyone have a good older Ammerman saddle they want to trade? LOL.
