Jumping Saddles
Manufacturer: Hermes
Model: Oxer
Category: Jumping Saddles
Purchase: I bought this saddle used at about half the regular price. I bought it because this model has buffalo seat and knee pads and both thigh and calf blocks which was exactly what I was looking for.
Likes: I needed a nice secure saddle because my horse can really pop me over the fences no matter how small. She's a very scopy jumper and I'm not so confident. I thought I could use a nice grippy seat and the calf blocks for extra support and it has really worked well for me. Even on the flat my legs are practically glued to the saddle. It has given me a whole new level of confidence.
Dislikes: There really isn't anything I don't like about the saddle. It's wonderful in every way. If I were to nit pick I guess it would be that the nice supple calfskin panels is the first to show wear, but I think the nice soft calfskin is very comfortable for the horse. The combination with the wool flocking seems to conform nicely to their back. Also, you can feel the calf blocks are there so it might bother some people who are not used to it. Of course it does come without calf blocks too.
Quality: I really like the grippy feel of the buffalo leather. It seems durable yet nice and soft to the touch, much nicer feeling than the pigskin version that feels hard and slippery. There is no doubt that every detail of this saddle is meticulously put together. The quality really shines through and it's expensive for a reason. There's no doubt only the finest materials have been used. It's expensive, but there's a reason and a good reason the Hermes name is so famous.
Summary: The Oxer model has been discontinued which is such a shame. It's such a nice saddle, but I'm guessing the new Brasileria model is replacing it. They look very similar, but I don't know if they have the same feel. In any case, if you encounter the same riding problems as me and if you can still get your hands on an Oxer I highly recommend it. They hold up very well so a used one would be just as good.
