Neck Tie
Halters/Ropes/Leads

Manufacturer: Country Supply
Model: Neck Tie
Category: Halters/Ropes/Leads

Purchase: I bought this piece of equipment from Country Supply catalog for $10.95. I can't remember who the manufacturer is, but it seems a pretty generic item. I got it because I was hitching my horses up to a carriage every day, and I got really tired of trying to get collars, check reins, and bridles on around bulky halters.

Likes: I LOVE the freedom having my horses' heads free for harnessing. I don't have to unbuckle a halter, slip it around the neck, work around the tangle of loose cheeks and noseband, etc. Best of all, I don't have to worry that a horse will pull the loose halter over his head, or that he could put a foot through the loose straps if he went down to graze. My horses were very comfortable in this neck tie, and actually seem to prefer it for trailering since they are much freer to move about without being totally untied. I also had one horse set back while tied with this collar, and he didn't panic and fight worse like they often do in a halter. The collar withstood the abuse and it didn't slip off. I'm not saying that all horses will react like this if they set back, but my horse didn't panic from the pressure. For times that I did need to restrain the head (as I did once at the vet's), I just looped the lead rope over the nose and threaded it back through the D-ring to make a figure-8 halter. It worked like a charm. I even rode my horses in this contraption all summer, using it like a one-rein bridle. Worked great!

Dislikes: This particular model is made from stiff nylon that can be difficult to work with. Sometimes the strap ends don't like to go through the keepers. Also, this would not be a good tool for a horse that doesn't lead well, or who is pushy. You have little to no control over the actual head, so a horse can get away with a lot more. It's also hard to keep them from grazing when tied unless you tie them really, really short. My horses are obedient and respectful, so I haven't had any problems with this device, but I can see that some horses might not do well with just a collar.

Quality: The nylon webbing is stiff and a little rough on the hands, but it's quite strong and durable. These got left in the bed of my truck whenever I wasn't using them, and the buckles did start to rust a little, but I feel that is my fault. I did once take one of my horses away, leaving the other tied up. He pulled, yanked, and even set back and fought once, but the collar stayed nicely intact and he didn't pull it over his head. I have since restitched both collars, however, as eventually the stitching did start to come apart near the D-rings. I guess nothing lasts forever! The nylon is still in great shape, though.

Summary: I'm hooked on horse collars! When these wear out (if they ever do!) I'd like to try the Free Head horse collar, which I think is made of higher quality nylon. Lots of people think I'm crazy for tying my horses with nothing but a collar, but I find that simple training will give you a horse that is respectful no matter what he wears. My horses have never had a problem. Oh, and these are WONDERFUL for trail rides! No bulky halter under the bridle, and it lets the horse put his head down far enough to eat without having to tie him on a long rope that he could get his foot over.
