Old Mac
Original Old Mac horse boot
Dressage Saddles

Manufacturer: Old Mac
Model: Original Old Mac horse boot
Category: Dressage Saddles

Purchase: I have had 2 pair of Old Mac horse boots for 3 years. I paid about $150/pair. I wanted a boot to use if a horse pulled a shoe or had a bruised sole, as well as shoes to hack out in during the winter months my horse had shoes pulled off.

Likes: I found the Old Macs easy to measure, easy to put on and off, and easy to clean. They were very durable, and were only damaged when borrowed for a horse who really wasn't the same size hoof. The borrowed boot always was a right boot, so I unfortunately now have 2 new looking left boots and 2 somewhat misshapen right boots! I used them in deep river crossings and mud and never had them come off. I did not find that they rubbed, but I was careful to follow directions for breaking in period and for strap adjustment. When put on a wrong sized hoof, we simply put some vet wrap on the coronet to prevent rubbing.

Dislikes: The boots were rounder in shape than my horses' hooves, giving an ungainly, loose look. I did not feel they would be good to jump in for this reason, though I never tested that. Sometimes on wet or muddy grassy slopes the tread would not give a good grip, and the horse would slip mildly.

Quality: Very well made, did not hold sand, mud or water in any way that bothered my horses. Light yet tough. Held up beautifully.

Summary: Very well made, easy to use boot. Great for casual hacks, including through water, or as a temporary replacement for a lost shoe or to protect a bruised sole ( for turn-out or riding). Not what I would use for jumping or any competitive event, as I thought they were too round in shape and the tread was not great in mud or wet grass.
