Purchase: I bought this martingale from the Dover catalog because I wanted a cheapie martingale that would fit the 17.1-hand TB I ride, unlike all the martingales in the lesson tack room at the barn. I didn't need anything fancy, just something that would fit a full-size horse, not the ponies that the kids ride. It was only 20 bucks, so the choice was obvious, not to mention it goes with the cheapie Suffolk bridle I bought.
Likes: Perfectly decent leather, nice dark brown, great value for the money.
Dislikes: It's too small! It only came in one size, Horse, which was the size I wanted anyway. And granted this horse is a big guy at 17.1. But it's not like it's too small by a half inch, or an inch. After I adjusted it as long as it would go, it was still too short to reach his noseband by a good 5 inches or so, to say nothing of allowing room for him to move his head. Sooo, it's useless for my purposes. It's odd, actually, because the matching bridle fits the same horse just fine, with plenty of holes to spare.
Quality: Not incredible leather, but what do you expect for $20? It's not stiff or brittle or veined or crackled or anything, so really it's not bad, especially for the price. It doesn't have one of those rubber thingys that stops the main strap from sliding through the yoke, but that's easy enough to add for those who want one. Stitching, buckles and keepers are perfectly adequate.
Summary: An excellent value, but the sizing runs really small. Consider the full (horse) size to be more like a cob size, and you should be fine.
