Weatherbeeta
Kool Coat
Horsewear

Manufacturer: Weatherbeeta
Model: Kool Coat
Category: Horsewear

Purchase: Purchased on clearance at State Line Tack (PetSmart) for about $30. I was looking at purchasing a fly sheet for my Thoroughbred because flies are horrible - the barn where we board is uphill from the Ohio River, so bugs really are a problem. I had looked at other fly sheets (by baker, horsewear ireland, and weatherbeeta's other models) and the mesh was so broadly woven, it looked like anything could get through it. The Kool Coat had a much tighter weave to it and reflected more UV Light (to prevent sun bleaching on his coat) so I decided to give it a go.

Likes: This blanket is probably one of the best summer turnouts I have ever seen. You would think that the tighter weave would make it hotter in the summer heat, but even in the 90 degree weather here in Kentucky (it hasn't gotten much hotter yet - time will test this blanket's REAL breath ability) and he can have it on in the direct sunlight without breaking much sweat at all. He gets small patches of sweat around his stifles and top of his back but that's about it - the rest of him is cool and dry. The flies CANNOT get through this sheet! Even in the rain, I have gone out to find flies all over his pasture buddies and my horse is comfortable as can be because the flies may be on the sheet but they are not on him. I even found a huge horsefly on his hindquarter - he didn't even know it was there! I have NEVER seen that happen before, so I was very pleased. The blanket has prevented any sun bleaching on his shoulders so far, which is great because he got very sun bleached last year. It also keeps my horse very clean, and is useful for showing, trailering, AND turnout use.

Dislikes: The blanket doesn't fit him SUPER well - it's a little bit droopy in the hindquarter area, but that's about it. It lets some dirt in if your horse rolls heavily, but keeps most of it out. I suppose in hotter weather (when it gets 100+ degrees) it could become a little bit hot - I have not tested it in such conditions just yet. You are not supposed to turn them out in the rain with it because the sheet is not waterproof, obviously. But if it's raining, you don't really need it. Other than that.... nothing.

Quality: This is a wonderful sheet. Tightly woven 1200 denier breathable nylon, white with navy watch plaid & navy trim. It also comes with hunter green trim, and is available in a gusseted version (this was the STANDARD Kool Coat, not the gusseted version) and with an attachable neck sheet. The shoulders are lined pretty well - my horse has had it on for a while and he has no shoulder rubs yet, which is a plus because we are getting right into Eventing Season. I love this sheet, and will take it with me everywhere to keep my horse nice and clean. Price ranges from a little over $20 to up to $50 depending on where you purchase from.

Summary: The best sheet I have used and seen so far. Definitely keeps those flies off, keeps him cool, and keeps him clean. Love it.
