Purchase: My horse had problems with shoeing thus I read the book "Horse owner's guide to Natural hoof care" by J. Jackson. With the help of a natural hoof care practitioner, I bought the boa boots used for 80$. (there are sold new for about 190$ a pair) I got the gaiter later for 25$.
Likes: The boa boots are very easy to put on. I got the help from my "natural hoof care practitioner" to get the fit right but I also used the chart on the boahorseboots.com website
I like the dial at the front, it's quick and easy. I've ridden my horse in sand, mud and rocky conditions and they always stayed on. My horse trot and canter in them in gravel and is not sensitive anymore.
Dislikes: I recommend using the gaiter with the boa boots. the first time I did without and there was a slight irritation and bleeding on the back of one of his legs. Also, it is a little bit harder to put on when your horse needs a trim. Otherwise, it's great!
Quality: I used it in muddy conditions and washed the boots after the trail, it dried quickly and didn't rot or smell. It is also durable as I got the boots used and they are still in perfect condition.
Summary: Let your horse go barefoot and buy some boots! It helped my horse tremendously and we now enjoy long and fun trail rides. You may find more info on barefoot horses from the American association of Natural Hoof care practitioners. www.aanhcp.org
(It's based on trimming to the wild horse model and there are some distinct differences between a barefoot trim and a "pasture trim", which is what a regular farrier would do to trim a barefoot horse. With a barefoot trim, no live sole is cut.)
