Purchase: One of my Quarter mares got her leg stuck in a fence and tore a big gash on the inside of her front leg just above her chestnut. It looked like a surgical cut, perfectly straight and through the first layer of skin. (3 1/2" long x 1/4" deep) By the time she came in, it was too old to stitch. The vet recommended hydrotherapy at least once a day for 20 minutes and Novalsan Ointment twice a day. He said it would reduce scarring. I paid $15.00 for a jar of it.
Likes: The ointment is light blue in color and light in texture. It is easily washed off to clean the wound and reapply fresh salve. As the vet said, minimal scarring! This big wound closed up and presently is only a hairline scar that is covered over by the hair above and below it. I've had horses for 30 years and have never seen a wound close so well without stitches.
Dislikes: The only thing I didn't like is that the ointment doesn't have any fly/gnat repellancy to it. (we live in Florida and the bugs are bad) The vet said not to use Swat as it would increase scarring so what I did was circle the outside of the wound with Swat with a very light coating above the wound so it didn't "melt" down into the area. It worked great this way.
Quality: Great stuff!
Summary: I am giving this a 5 even though it didn't help with keeping bugs away but then that's not what it's designed for anyway. (I think the properties of fly repellents do lead to more scarring.)
