Purchase: I purchased this book on the internet. I paid $16.95 delivered.
I felt Showtime! would be a good book for my daughter to read over the summer. She enjoys ongoing series, and the next book is due out in the fall.
Likes: This is a very wholesome 'horsey' book that would appeal to riders with show experience as well as kids who only dream of showing.I appreciated the life lessons subtly interwoven throughout the story line. The importance of family and friends, goal setting and good sportsmanship, even through adversity, are stressed.I loved the animal interaction especially Angel's love for Blair, which is very touching. And Toby, the car-chasing Jack Russell, what a hoot! Really good character development for a short story.
Dislikes: There really wasn't anything about the story I didn't like. If there was any negative it might be that the lessons and riding tips were aimed either for kids who already understand the lingo, or that kid who cares enough about riding a jumper course to educate themselves through the riding tips. However, this is not a 'how-to' book. If it's over your head, just skim through the rides. The story is neat.
Quality: I enjoyed the author's style of writing and felt drawn to the characters, who are quite unique, especially Blair and Melanie. While it's not a comedy, there are some very funny parts; it's not a riding manual, but it gives you excellent riding tips; it's not a melodrama, but some parts will make you cry.You click with the characters very early on. An excellent, uplifting, feel-good book.
Summary: Showtime! is full of wonderful characters that horse crazy kids of all ages can identify with.Almost immediately, the reader feels they are part of the 'DT' team. You get accurate, exquisitely detailed portrayals of their 'A' circuit show jumping adventures. You feel the darts of anxiety as they wait their turn on deck, and feel the rush of excitement as they enter the ring and you join up with Blair or Melanie and ride the course with them.
Really fun book.
