Caswell Adhesives
Chelsea Leather Food
Tack Room

Manufacturer: Caswell Adhesives
Model: Chelsea Leather Food
Category: Tack Room

Purchase: I had heard about Chelsea Leather Food in 1995 and kept hoping I would find it locally. Last year I started watching for CLF on eBay after finding it on a few tack store websites ($9 or more plus high shipping costs). Chelsea Leather Food is used primarily by soccer players, so you may be able to find it at a sporting goods store. Retail is $9. Shipping varies. Chelsea Leather Food is available in neutral and black-tinted. It is a semi-solid paste packaged in a 6.25 ounce tub.

Likes: Chelsea Leather Food revitalizes old leather, makes cheap leather 'feel' better, and keeps expensive leather buttery soft. BEST OF ALL, it doesn't ruin stitching. CLF is all natural and smells less than Neatsfoot oil. My trainer and I have used Chelsea Leather Food on every piece of tack we own - from Stubben saddles and English breastplates to Big Horn saddles and western gear. One 6.25 ounce tub completely conditions a dry western saddle or three dry English saddles.

Dislikes: Chelsea Leather Food has no faults in my opinion. I apply it and work it into the leather with my bare hands. A cloth just seems to get in the way. CLF doesn't make my hands rough and smelly like Neatsfoot oil. HOWEVER, if you like to stay clean while conditioning leather, you should wear gloves.

Quality: Chelsea Leather Food is made from natural ingredients. No petroleum-based oils. I set aside one cheap English bridle as a test for CLF: The hook closures were impossible to work by hand before conditioning. After leaving CLF on the bridle overnight, I was able to open the hook ends with ONE HAND! More importantly, the bridle is still supple five months after conditioning it with Chelsea Leather Food. (I did not re-treat it.)

Summary: Chelsea Leather Food is an excellent leather conditioner. After the initial treatment, maintaining saddles and bridles requires very little CLF. CLF delivers high value per dollar spent. Because I buy and sell used saddles, I became a retailer for Chelsea Leather Food. I love this product!
