Model: Super Mask Fly Mask Without Ears - Arab
Category: Fly Control
Purchase: I purchased the Super Mask Fly Mask Without Ears/Arab online through KV Vet Supply Company for $11.95.
Likes: The main thing I like about the Super Mask is that my horse cannot get this fly mask off his face! It has a very secure double velcro throat latch. It also has furry borders to help keep the flies from crawling up into and under the mask. Joe's the kind of horse who prefers to be absolutely naked, so keeping a fly mask on him has been a challenge. I've tried the Cashell and Wrangler masks in the past, and "Houdini Joe" somehow managed to wiggle himself out of both of them. Every day I'd have to search the pasture to locate the missing fly mask. One time I even caught him stomping on the Wrangler mask - I think he was trying to bury it so I wouldn't find it! I finally gave up and quit using fly masks. My vet got on my case about not having a fly mask on him and recommended the Super Mask. I ordered one up thinking, "This will probably be a total waste of money, but I'll try it at least." I sure am glad I did.
Dislikes: This is such a ridiculously small complaint, and actually it's more of an observation than a complaint... The furry borders on the mask pick up foxtails and other sticky plants so you have to pick them off each night. --BUT-- The borders work so well with keeping the flies out from under the mask that this small hassle is worth dealing with.
Quality: The Super Mask is very well constructed. The double velcro on the throatlatch keeps the mask securely in place. The furry borders appear to be well attached. I've only used it for one month so I cannot comment on long term, but so far it has held up nicely (I rinse it out every week and it still looks good). I'll probably get a full season out of it, maybe even two or three.
Summary: I'm so happy my vet recommended the Super Mask. I didn't think there was a mask out there that Joe could not escape -- but there is, and it's reasonably priced and fits him fairly well. His head size is in between Cob and Full Horse so finding one to fit was difficult. The Super Mask/Arab is a bit short on his nose but otherwise fits nice and snug like it is suppose to fit. For the exposed nose area, I apply Miracle Coat's No Fly Zone fly spray with a soft cloth. The combination of the two products keeps him fly-free all day. I highly recommend the Super Mask.
