Purchase: I purchased this dressage pad online from Dressage On A Budget in the UK. I paid approximately $152.00 including both the shipping and conversion rate. Their website is www.dressageonabudget.co.uk
Likes: This dressage pad is softer than the Christ's Lambskin Dressage Pad made in Germany, and comparable to the Mattes version here in the US, but is less expensive. I chose the one with Black wool on a Black cotton quilted pad. The Mattes pads are overpriced in my opinion, so I initially tried contacting the Christ Company in Germany to purchase one of theirs, but never received a response. After an internet search I found Equine Essentials. The folks at Equine Essentials were super responsive and very pleasant to work with. Their excellent customer service quieted my worries about ordering a product overseas. The pad itself is an excellent product, my horse loves it. The lambskin is durable and soft. After each ride, all I have to do is brush the pad with my hand, and all the dirt comes right off. It's very easy to care for. It is washable although I've not had to wash it yet. The wither area is contoured which makes a huge difference in my horse's comfort. Straight edged pads leave him sore. The lambskin also helps regulate his body temperature, keeping him warm in the winter and cooler in the summer.
Dislikes: The prices on all of these kind of pads are high, but I'd rather have one quality item than several inferior and useless products in my tack supply. Buying high quality from the start ends up being more economical in the long run.
Quality: This pad is attractive and well constructed. The cotton pad is nicely quilted, and the overall stitching on the pad and attached lambskin is even and durable.
Summary: I was leery when I ordered this product because I had never heard of Stephens. None of the tack stores in my area carried them so I couldn't look at or touch it before placing an order. I took a risk and ordered it anyway because it was available in black, and also because the people at Equine Essentials were so professional. If you're not familiar with a Stephens' Dressage Pad but are looking for a high quality dressage pad, try one out - I don't think you'll be disappointed.
