Purchase: Purchased from American Livestock Supply catalog for $19.95 for treatment of hoof abscess. After a couple weeks of using countless rolls of duct tape and self adherent bandaging on a hoof abscess that is slow healing, I needed a reusable and durable form of sole protection. The design of the boot has allowed me to impose some of the recommended soaks on my non-compliant lame horse who thinks having his foot in a bucket is worse than a sore foot.
Likes: This boot is very well made and fairly easy to put on and take off. Most importantly it stayed put and protected the sole of the hoof. It controls the medication/dressing so that it stays in contact with the correct area. It holds adequate amount of fluid for soaking and the horse is compelled to cooperate with the plan. It was durable enough for turnout while still protecting the sole of the hoof.
Dislikes: The velcro on the nylon strap is too thick for the plastic buckle, making it very hard to strap the boot on according to the instructions.
Quality: It is like a rubber boot for humans, soft and flexible with a wide opening. The nylon strap secures the boot nicely but I had to use a piece of twine because I couldn't get the velcro part of the strap thru the buckle the final time. It was a good height and did not rub at the fetlock. I did not use the medication pad, I made disposable ones.
Summary: If you need to soak your horse's foot or protect the sole, it is a must have.
