Purchase: I bought my pad online for $132 based on advertising and trainer recommendation. Pro Choice is a local company.
Likes: Really liked the combination of having a saddle blanket/pad combination, as well as light weight. The blanket pattern is attractive, and it has held up well. The fleece was initially a nice feature.
Dislikes: This pad seemed nice at first, though I expected a more comfortable ride. It took several rides to conform to my mare's back. Within the first 6 months I used the pad (4 rides or so a week, doing equitation and trail courses), this pad compressed and provided decreased comfort for my horse and me. Another bad thing was that the wool fleece got really, really stinky even though I followed the mfr's maintenance advice.
Quality: Top blanket is excellent quality, but wear leathers are stiff. Nothing fell apart, but the wool fleece stunk, even with recommended care. I didn't think the padding lasted well, either, and there were definite areas that compressed and did not pad at all after just 6 months of use.
Summary: Overall, I think SMX pads are a decent product, but overpriced and over-hyped. I expected my pad to last much longer. This was my second one, and the upgraded model. I will not buy again.
