Barrel Saddles
Manufacturer: Hilason
Model: Barrel Racing Trail Sports Saddle
Category: Barrel Saddles
Purchase: After trying many saddles to try to fit one to myself and my new Arabian, I tried a treeless saddle that my friend had specially made for her and her horse. Hers was a Bob Marshall and when she told me how much she paid I knew I could never afford that much for a saddle.{$1,200} So after reading about how your horse is apt to change for the better after using a treeless, I went on E-bay and bid on a Hilason saddle. I paid $444.00 and 42.40 for the shipping.
Likes: I like the light weight of it, less than 20 lbs. Compared to my other saddle which is about 30 lbs. My horse should like that. I like the suede seat, the basketweave design on the leather. I like the D-rings and the touch of silver rosettes to give it a little sparkle. My horse is spooky and bolts when she gets scared, so I was a little apprehensive to use something new like this on her. Well, someone slammed a trailer door at the barn and sure enough she took off! She went like a flash across the yard. But I was secure in my new saddle, It fits like a glove around me.
Dislikes: Well my horse has a high trot and I am use to posting on the trail even in a western saddle, but I can't post at all. I am in a fixed position and that's it. The rigging on this saddle is a little lower in design than my regular Endurance saddle so my cinch was too big, I needed to order a smaller cinch, about 2 inches smaller. And I also had to get a special anti-slip pad to use with it. Because there is no tree to keep it exactly in the middle when you get on.
Quality: It seems to be great quality. A person in my barn came over to check it out and wanted to trade saddles with me! The stitching seems secure and tight and even. The dye hasn't run. {Black} The suede seat covers a larger area and the fleece underneath is soft. The stirrups even have the basketweave design on them, very classy! The D-rings on the back will be helpful when I go on longer rides and need to tie stuff to the saddle.
Summary: I think it is definitely worth the money! I think it looks a little different than what I am used to seeing in a Western saddle, but if it holds me on a flighty horse and looks nice doing it, that's what counts. I am in my 50's and tired of lifting big heavy saddles up on horse's backs. My next step will probably be a Hilason English saddle, maybe next year.
