Holly Hugo-Vidal with Sue M. Copeland
Build Confidence Over Fences
Manufacturer: Holly Hugo-Vidal with Sue M. Copeland
Model: Build Confidence Over Fences
Purchase: I bought this book from Equi-Products in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The price tag says $32.99 but I got it slightly cheaper as it was on sale.
I chose this book because I saw an ad for it in Practical Horseman magazine and it looked good. Holly Hugo-Vidal has also written various articles for Practical Horseman and I like her style of teaching.
Likes: The book is 150 pages long and includes lots of pictures and diagrams (all in colour). Holly gives clear, easy-to-understand advice, but the pictures and diagrams will be helpful to someone who learns better by seeing.
She starts with the basics (proper riding alignment while in the saddle) before laying out a series of lesson plans.
So as not to deter nervous or inexperienced riders, Holly suggests learning to jump first without poles, then with ground poles, then later moving on to low verticals and cross-rails... all with a coach or spotter nearby, of course.
She gives many tips and suggestions throughout the book, which will provide a little more insight should your horse throw you a curve-ball, so to speak.
Dislikes: There's not much to dislike about it.
As a matter of fact, this book is so informative that I only wish she'd written more similar to this for other horse topics.
Quality: The book is available in paperback, bound regularly, and with clear easy-to-read type.
The pages are glossy with sharp photographs and simple diagrams.
The riders in the photos are demonstrating Holly's techniques properly (this may seem like an odd comment, but I've read some "educational" horse books where the author says one thing but the photos show another).
Summary: Great book.
A friend, who was shopping with me at the time, decided to pick up a copy of the book as well.
I wish it were written sooner - a book of this quality is long overdue.
