Purchase: I bought this saddle in very good, used condition on ebay for $800. After researching its qualities online, at a local tack shop and having grown up riding regular Siegfried jumping saddles, I thought this would be a good purchase for me.
Likes: What I like mostly is it gives me a secure, balanced seat for riding on the flat. Also, I am long legged, so I like the long flaps.
Dislikes: The problem I have with this saddle is that since the seat's so deep, I found the pommel to be a problem occasionally when posting the trot or when jumping. Also, when I would trail ride in it, I'd get saddle sore on my seat bones and the pommel would get in my way. I was told the tree was medium but I think it must be more on the narrow side because it only fits well on high withered thoroughbreds and pinches the quarter horses.
Quality: This is a Swiss made Stubben and the quality is definitely there. Strong, well made stirrup bars and hardware throughout, beautiful supple flaps, well sewn, thick chrome leather billets and excellent resiliency in the wool flocking.
Summary: This saddle would be a good school or show saddle for hunters or equitation on the flat because it helps your position and looks great. I wouldn't recommend it for dressage (maybe training) because its a little too forward seat, nor would I recommend it for trail or event usage because of the problems I stated above. If you're looking for a saddle that most resembles the old German Stubben Siegfried, go for the VSS!
