Myler
Comfort Snaffle w/center barrel and 5" shanks
Western Bridle Acc
Manufacturer: Myler
Model: Comfort Snaffle w/center barrel and 5" shanks
Category: Western Bridle Acc
Purchase: I bought this bit at a local tack shop for $64.00 because the one I had been using, which was a roller-mouth Dee ring snaffle, seemed too harsh for my new horse. After reading testimonials of other peoples experiences with these bits and also doing my own research (reading the book about their products) I decided the philosophy behind them was for me.
Likes: I spent some time handling all the Western myler bits at the tack shop. I held them in my palm and pulled back on them, trying to emulate how they might affect the horses mouth. This mouthpeice seemed the best, in that it did not pinch my skin (some of the others did!). Another thing I liked was that it would only collapse just so far..in other words, it appeared to have a "stop" built into it which kept it from the nutcracker effect of a normal jointed-mouth snaffle. Also, the mouthpeice was curved in the shape of a horses mouth, which seemed agreeable.
Dislikes: There is nothing I dislike about this bit thus far.
Quality: The metal is SS with copper inlays in the mouthpeice and is very smooth and polished. All the moving parts work nicely without any squeaks. Another thing I really like are the loops to which the bridle is attached. They are slightly turned outward so no matter how you pull the rein, they will not dig into the horses face.
Summary: This is a very nice bit for an intermediate horse coming off a snaffle. The 5" shanks apply a small amount of leverage to encourage the horse to flex at the poll and soften. The left and right sides of the bit can be used independently so its easy to tell the horse what you want without confusing him. I use it for trail riding and never have any problems with control.
