Close Contact Saddles

Manufacturer: Crosby
Model: XL H
Category: Close Contact Saddles

Purchase: I waited most of my life to get a saddle and finally did... when Crosby discontinued making its XL H. The saddle, which normally retailed for around $1700 US, was purchased for $1150. It is a 16.5" Crosby XL with a long flap and medium width.

Likes: I call it the Cadillac of saddles because it is very comfortable and easy to ride in. I agree with the other reviews that it also tends to put you in a forward position, however this is the exact style I wanted. It is also very comfortable and good for equitation on the flat purposes. The knee pads are nice and soft. As a very thin boney rider, my seat bones are constantly getting pounded at the posting trot, but in my Crosby XL, the padding is enough that I don't even feel sore after hours of riding. I absolutely love the saddle and would recommend it to any rider (if you can still find one!). I ride many different horses, and it fits all of them. I use a rising pad, but this is more to increase the horse's comfort rather than need.

Dislikes: I have no complaints! But I will note that it tends to put you in a forward position which is ok if you are a jumper. I use it for equitation on the flat and over fences and find it the perfect saddle for me.

Quality: Great quality, very comfortable and durable. My saddle is still very new, but felt broken in the moment I sat in it. The only thing that needed breaking in was the matching Crosby stirrup leathers, which were a little stiff to begin with, causing slight bruising on my inside thigh until they were ridden in a few times and stretched. However, this tends to be the case with new leathers.

Summary: Great saddle for any rider, beginner to advanced. I highly recommend it, but good luck finding a new one!
