Purchase: I purchased my Carlton new from Ansur for $2400.
Likes: As a treeless saddle, the Carlton offers exceptional stability and security. With both a gullet and extra support, the saddle has the feel of a twist much like a conventional treed saddle and still offers both horse and rider the comfort of treeless. The leather is beautiful quality. The saddle fits all my horses including a new youngster who is still very narrow and my older horse who is very wide.
Dislikes: The only disadvantage I can find is that the stock model of the Carlton comes with a suede seat and flaps. Mine, made all in smooth leather, is still listed as "custom" which means that anyone ordering that option cannot return the saddle to Ansur if it does not work out during the trial period. (Not too likely, but something to consider.)
Quality: High quality leather. Knee and thigh pads are velcroed in place allowing for all kinds of different placement options. Gullet pad is remove-able depending on the horse being fitted. I found it works well without the pad on my big horse giving the saddle additional lateral stability.
Summary: A superb saddle for dressage work and very low level jumping. High quality construction.
The treeless option is fantastic for horse and rider. There is much less concussion for both and the horse can move more freely. The Carlton gives the rider excellent security and the "feel" of a twist. Legal and beautiful in the show ring, the Carlton is a dressage horse's best friend!
