Purchase: I had been trail riding in the GA foothills and needed a comfortable saddle that provided more security going up/down, twisting and sliding through some of our trails. My daughter sent me a picture of a saddle she had seen on Ebay made by Jerry Shaw. I'm a saddle snob, but what I saw was eons finer than anything I have ever owned , including my Bob's. I was very disappointed when I wasn't high bidder on that JShaw saddle. Determined to own one, I emailed the company and Mr. Shaw phoned to get details on what I would like. ...Size, type, tooling pattern, etc. During the more than one hour's conversation, he allowed and encouraged me to design and choose each aspect of the saddle from determining the leather (Wickett and Craig or Hermann Oak) down to selecting the conchos and horn trim. His price for a Wade ranges from $2500 up depending on tooling and accessories selected.
Likes: Everything is absolutely perfect. The workmanship is outstanding, including incredibly beautiful hand tooling, with inset padded bicycle seat and free swinging fenders. Not only is it gorgeous, it's made for serious work and it's comfortable for me and my horses. After riding it one time, I sold my other saddles and as money allowed, began replacing them with saddles made by Jerry Shaw. I now own a show reiner and a ranch cutter (working cow horse) as well as the Wade. Each is uniquely beautiful and functional and a joy to ride.
Dislikes: Am disappointed that I cannot justify owning other Jerry Shaw saddles.
Quality: All of Mr. Shaw's custom saddles are made from the highest quality leather, trees and hardware available and he uses only real sheepskin. His in house artisans are unparalleled and no detail is left unfinished, whether it be visible or hidden within the saddle structure.
Summary: I've been riding for a little over 40 years, and have owned saddles from some of the top makers. I do believe you can't find a saddle better made or more beautiful or more comfortable for you and your horse than one from Jerry Shaw. I've noted that some of the top winners in competitive reining, cutting and working cowhorse competitions ride JShaw saddles, and I've heard nothing but praise for them.
