Herm Sprenger
Bow Balance Stirrups
English Saddle Fittings/Pads

Manufacturer: Herm Sprenger
Model: Bow Balance Stirrups
Category: English Saddle Fittings/Pads

Purchase: I bought my stirrups online from St. Croix Saddlery for $199; shipping was free, and the stirrups were immediately available for shipment.

Likes: The stirrups are extremely comfortable. I bought the older style of Sprenger jointed stirrups several year ago to combat aching knees and have been very happy with them, but, as I've gotten a bit older, my ankles have become more and more inflexible, making it hard for me to turn my toes out properly and get my heels down without significant discomfort. The built-in twist (there's a left and a right stirrup!) in each stirrup makes it easy to wrap your leg around the horse AND get your heel down without ankle soreness. My trainer was pleased with my leg position on the flat and over jumps, and I found it easier to keep my leg on the horse and in the proper place at the canter, even when my horse bucked. The stirrups are also lightweight -- there are cut-outs in the upper part of each branch to reduce weight -- and the base of the stirrup is some kind of lightweight composite material. These stirrups are definitely lighter than my old Sprengers.

Dislikes: The only thing I don't care for is the small bright-blue stripe on each branch and patch of bright blue in the pad, but that's just because bright blue's not my favorite color! (I don't think the color is that visible when you're in motion anyway.)

Quality: The stirrups may be literally lightweight, but there's nothing lightweight about their quality. The rubber covering the joints is dense and, I'm guessing, will be quite durable, and I think the material that makes up the base of the stirrup is probably indestructible!

Summary: The stirrups are everything I hoped they'd be. Jointed stirrups are not for everyone (just ask George Morris!), but, if riding causes joint pain for you, try these stirrups. You'll probably love them.
