Purchase: I actually got this saddle for free from a friend who runs a riding school. She knew I wanted to start riding english and gave me this saddle because she wasn't using it anymore.
It's about 15-20 years old, but has held up fairly well considering the "abuse" it's taken.
Likes: It's a comfortable saddle. Thorowgood says they've discontinued the saddle, even though it was popular, so they could change their line around a little.
The seat and knee-rolls are covered in stretchy fabric.. it feels like there's a soft gel underneath. Very comfortable to sit in - absorbs shock well.
The flaps are made to look like synthetic leather.
The billets are very strong and secure, even after so much use.
Dislikes: The colour. It's a weird mix of pinkish purple. Very hard to describe, or forget ;)
The flaps are black, as is the underside of the saddle, but the rest is that weird colour. It definately wouldn't go over well in the show ring, but it would be great for eventers or gamers who want to add a little flash.
The flaps are also worn through in some spots, I guess where the irons have repeatedly rubbed. I've covered the holes with black fabric tape which seems to blend in well.
As this saddle is an old one, it's spread a bit so it doesn't quite have a medium tree now. It's a little wider. To correct this for the time being (while my new saddle is on order), I use a foam saddle pad made by Wintec.
Quality: Considering what it's been through, and how old it is, it's in good shape.
Summary: I'm training my horse right now, so this is the ideal saddle for that. It doesn't matter if it gets wet, muddy or scratched. It's also lightweight.
