Purchase: We started feeding hay cubes as they were more convenient to my partner and I (who both have back problems). The hay cubes come in 50lb bags, which is much easier to deal with then lugging around bales of hay.
We opted for the alfalfa timothy mix as straight alfalfa is just too much for our horses.
For a 50lb bag, we paid approximately $13.00 Cdn.
Likes: The bags. They don't rip or break after being handled by the company, shipper, retailer and then buyer. The material is woven, similar to that of a tarp, but much stronger.
They are also very easy to open... just pull a string at the top and they pop open.
Dislikes: The quality of the hay. The cubes are a sandy brownish colour, not greenish like we've seen from other brands.
It's also extremely dusty. The cubes fall apart easily and most times, once we've received the bags, they're approximately 45% full of hay dust.
We've bought other brands of cubes before where the cubes were well formed, but broke easily once the horses started chewing. Dust from the other brands was minimal. Having a horse with mild heaves, this is a very important issue to keep in mind.
With the Ontario Dehy cubes, we end up sifting out the dust and mixing it with soaked beet pulp so it doesn't go to waste. The horses will eat it that way. What's left (the cubes) are scattered over the ground.

Summary: The bags are great, the cubes need a lot of improvement.
We have now switched to another company who offers alfalfa timothy hay cubes (which are brighter in colour and less dusty) for a better price.
