Purchase: I had started taking my first riding lessons a few months prior to my purchase and deciding that riding was the love of my life I wanted to invest in my own equipment (and later a horse!). I bought this Troxel Spirit helmet from Dover for $34.90. I was drawn to the price and the fact that the helmet didn't look "cheap" for a schooling helmet.
Likes: For a schooling helmet it served *wonderfully*. It fits very well and the dial fit is wonderful for a growing head. Pony tails are no problem for this thing and I found myself wearing it even when I wasn't in the saddle. It has sufficient padding to make it comfortable and to help adjust the fit better. It easily made the transition from weekly lessons to daily rides on the horse of my own. Perhaps the biggest praise I can give this helmet is the fact that it literally SAVED MY LIFE! I was riding along a road when my horse's back legs slipped from under him. I was thrown forward landing on my head on the cement road and knocked out for 15 minutes. Helmets are designed to give way and dent on certain impacts, this does not speak for the quality but for they way they are designed. By designing the helmet to dent even upon seemingly light impact is a safety feature that absorbs energy that would otherwise be transferred through the material to the skull, that is why helmets dent somewhat easily. My helmet after the fall was cracked through the shell and severely dented. It collapsed where it needed to absorbing massive shock my head was encountering. I had it adjusted according to the instructions and it remained securely on my head even after the fall. I was almost life flighted to the ER (they thought I might have had a neck injury, but I didn't) and had a concussion (my head didn't even hurt after that day). This helmet survived a *major* fall and worked wonders. I can't imagine what I would have done without it. I opted not to return it for a replacement (which is offered for a small like $15 fee) but to keep it as a reminder to always wear a helmet.
Dislikes: The only two things that I didn't care for was 1) The plastic coating could easily be scratched by the everyday activities in a barn, I wore an inexpensive helmet cover during trail rides and everyday activities to prevent this. The helmet remained in pristine condition until my fall. 2)As my riding progressed and showing loomed near I was ready to upgrade to an IRH ATH (which I now have). This helmet doesn't really meet the fashion needs for a show ring, but that is why it is called a "schooling helmet" :)
Quality: Wonderful. For the price it has amazing fit, good quality and will last as long as there is no fall. I had mine for over three years and in that time no straps wore out, no buckles broke, the dial fit system remained in tack, with a cover on it didn't get scratched and the visor didn't come loose. After a few months the little black rubber bands that go around the neck strap ends broke but I fixed that with a few braiding bands, also after like 2 1/2 years a few pieces of velcro started to get loose on the padding but it came with replacements that I just never put on. Great quality period, amazing quality for the price!
Summary: Great schooling helmet! Would recommend to anyone.
