Purchase: Purchased used from Calabasas Saddlery in Calabasas, CA (GREAT salespeople- very helpful, and excellent selection of used tack). Purchase made via phone from Texas based on description and photos. I paid $605, and was thrilled to find my size in a pre-owned Pessoa in good condition so I could save a little money, ease the break-in period, and still take advantage of the warranty and quality of a Pessoa.
Likes: This saddle is FABULOUS. I am so spoiled now- I'll never go back to another brand. Even my husband, who is a die-hard western rider, loves to get on my mare to cool her out so he can "sit in the Argentine Marshmallow." The seat is soft yet supportive, and the knee rolls are placed just right so that they don't block your knee flexion if you need to move them. My horse (5 year old Quarter Mare- fairly wide back) moves much more freely now, and seems to revel in the panel stuffing.
Dislikes: I can see why people on this site are concerned with the stitching in the twist of the saddle. Mine is not ripped yet, but it appears that this area is more worn than the rest of the saddle, so I am trying to be especially careful not to "bonk" it on anything. Also, I had to purchase a separate girth to use just for this saddle because the billets are significantly shorter than those on my Crosby. Other than that, I am completely satisfied.
Quality: Obviously well made, as you would expect from a Pessoa. The panels and flaps have held up very well, despite being used, and have turned a beautiful golden newmarket color from oiling and conditioning. The color looks great on a bright chestnut.
Summary: I may be a Pessoa customer for life, but I think I need to start saving NOW if I ever expect to get a new model. The Gen X is a fantastic model for the "all around" rider- I use it for hacking, jumping, and trail. I'm still getting used to the slightly deeper seat, but without going to the flatter close-contact, it is a great all-purpose saddle.
