Purchase: I began seriously looking for a dressage saddle several months ago. I tried approximately 40 saddles, both new and used. My horse and I are both rather difficult to fit. I finally tried the Amerigo Vega dressage saddle and it fit us both extremely well. I tried the traditional flap model and then attempted to order it, but the wait time was almost 4 months! I then found the monoflap available at Trumbull Mountain Saddlery in the seat and tree size we needed. I paid $2395 for the saddle because it was a demo saddle so I received a discount.
Likes: From the first time I sat in this saddle on the plastic model horse in the tack shop where I tried it, I felt comfortable and balanced. When I put this on my mare's back, it slide right into place and fit her better than any other saddle I have tried in many months. The saddle is extremely well balanced and actually makes it easier to ride. I have found that I am able to ride more softly because my horse "hears" my aids more clearly than in other saddles. I found that in many of the dressage saddles I tried, it was difficult to get my lower leg on properly. This saddle actually assists in riding with a quiet, soft contact through the lower leg. My horse is moving very well in the saddle and seems as comfortable as me!
Dislikes: I preferred the look of the traditional flap saddle to the monoflap. However, this factor is negated by the additional close contact the monoflap provides. Plus, I got addicted to this saddle very quickly when I was trying it out and having to wait 4 months for the traditional flap was out of the question. I guess that is my other negative criticism -- it should not take 4 months to receive a non-custom saddle.
Quality: Although the time is the true test of a saddle's quality construction, the leather and stitching on this saddle appear to be of very high quality. The panels and flaps are very even and balanced and the billets appear very strong.
Summary: I anticipate I will have this saddle for many years and I hope I will continue to be as thrilled to ride in it as I am right now.
Usefulness Rating: 2.75 out of 5.
