The Bitless Bridle
English Bridles
Manufacturer: Robert Cook, FRCVS., PhD.
Model: The Bitless Bridle
Category: English Bridles
Purchase: I purchased the "Beta" bridle made from nylon coated in super soft vinyl (giving a synthetic leather look) through the manufacturer homepage at http://www.bitlessbridle.com. I only purchased the headstall, choosing to use my own reins, and the cost for that was $83.00 + shipping.
Likes: Where to start? This bridle is an amazing piece of work! I have an off-the-track, 6-year-old TB mare, and she has never responded better than she does with this bridle. She has never stopped so well... she has never been so incredibly quiet under saddle! She accepted this bridle the FIRST time I tried it on her. It was almost as if she was thanking me for giving her the benefit of the doubt. If it's "control" you're seeking (which people seem to believe only the bit will provide), give this bridle a shot, because I've NEVER had more than I do now from going bitless. Unlike the hackamore or sidepull styles, this bridle is NOT painful! It utilizes key pressure points, gently, which seem to encourage her instead of force her. And her head carriage is more relaxed and naturally beautiful; my guess is that a happier horse just plain wants to perform better. I'm trilled with my purchase. I cannot stress that enough.
Dislikes: The one complaint I have is that the straps which run under the horses chin (the ones you connect your reins to) sometimes become a little twisted. You don't lose anything from this, it is just annoying to me and I find myself fussing with them when I should just be riding. ;)
Quality: The construction seems simple but extremely durable! I've had this bridle just over a year now and have had no defective or material issues whatsoever. It cleans up nicely (and easily with a damp cloth or sponge) and since I got the synthetic one, I was able to connect my own reins, which saved me a little money. I do plan to purchase the real leather one next.
Summary: Excellent purchase! You will never know how well your horse performs until you give them a shot with this awesome design. I have had so many people ask me what I was using on her, and in disbelief that she was so calm and collected with it. I let many of them try it, who have since purchased it!
The Bitless Bridle is wonderful, and I feel like I've done my horse a favor and that she truly appreciates it by showing me what a good girl she really is day in and day out. Her favorite thing now is going bareback and bitless on the trails! =)
