Horsewear
Manufacturer: Weatherbeeta
Model: Orican Turnout Standard Neck Medium Weight
Category: Horsewear
Purchase: I bought it at Bit of Britain for $120 (plus, I got a free saddle pad!) on sale.
Likes: I think it's great. The first winter, my horse had a 78 "duck" blanket that rub her chest because it was way too tight. The next year, I had her in a 78 Stormshield turnout that I barely squished her into, a Stormshield(?) stable blanket that kind of fit (80), then some 78 Schneiders stable blanket that was very expensive, but sweated all her weight off (she looked worse than the other rescues!) and rub huge patches of fur off. This year she was in a 78 State line stable blanket that didn't go past her shoulders, another 78 Schneiders stable blanket that rubbed fur and skin off her withers and started going at me with teeth when I went near it. Next, she had on a 78 Rider's turnout that fell over her shoulders (it ended up on an Arab with a HUGE chest that never fits in blankets and the shoulder darts are great). Finally, I gave up and bought this blanket. It fits beautifully. The Orican is laced up tightly, wraps around her, even when lying down, and moves freely. Besides, she's warm and can put her tail up and it hasn't rubbed. The best: no back seam and it does not weigh down and hurt withers. Since it's built an inch higher, although it is not cutback, it can sit on withers without rubbing.
Dislikes: It's great, but the surcingles are hard to insert in the holder clips and it tends to run 1-2 inches big, but my horse is weirdly built (is pure racing TB, but looks like a QH/Standardbred cross) and has a big chest, broad shoulders, and a long back with big barrel for her diminutive 15.2 size. No blanket has ever fit perfectly until now.
Quality: Very well built, mine has only the tiniest snag after a few months of my mare living outside 24/7 with 7 other crazy, high-strung goofballs.
Summary: The one I bought is blackberry plaid, but the picture made it look plum on the top and navy on the bottom. When I got it, I thought I would hate the color, but it looks really nice on a chocolate bay. All my friends think that she looks adorable, even the one who says I put too much dorky stuff on her. Another is looking for some for her geldings (she loves plaid). My horse does not care about color--it's already muddy (the dirt brushes right off). She loves that it moves with her, so thank you Freestyle! She can run, buck, crow-hop, and roll and it won't slip. As you can tell, she tests everything hates anything constricting.
