Likes: The seat is quite deep for an all purpose which is great for flat work and for riding without stirrups on a spooky mare! The seat just locks you into place and even with my back (which is naturally crooked), it helps to keep me in the right position and not collapse on one side like I tend to do on slightly flatter seated saddles.
My mare is very narrow for an Arab and has high withers so the narrow gullet fitting and cut back pommel of this saddle fit her to a T. There are no pressure points when I take the saddle off!!
Dislikes: Just as the deep seat is great and comfy for flat work, I find it a tad too deep for fast riding like galloping and jumping when I want to get my seat off the saddle. The pommel sometimes gets in the way in a forward seat.
Quality: Although my L&R saddle is second hand, the construction and materials (mine is leather with leather knee rolls) are of the highest workmanship and are still going with strong with MANY years left in it. It is so well made, even the billets are holding up strong.
My model has knee rolls and skinny thigh rolls at the back. I generally don't like a lot of padding on my saddles but the knee rolls are not massive and surprisingly quite supportive. I hate thigh rolls but again, the ones on my saddle are quite thin and are not intrusive at all. I can get my leg back for stronger aids without being blocked.
The seat width and the placement of the knee rolls suit my female shape! I don't feel like I'm sliding around or that my legs being forced into one particular position like most saddles that are built for the male physique.
On the whole, the saddle seems to be getting better with age!
Summary: I love this saddle as I feel safe riding in it thanks to the comfy seat and excellent workmanship. It's one I would never part with and will buy another Lovatt and Rickett saddle again!
