Category: English Chaps/Boots/Helmets

Purchase: Bought at: Carriage House Saddlery, Trumansburg, NY Paid: 49.95 I bought these because my old half chaps basically fell apart and I needed new ones, but didn't have a lot of money to spend at the moment. I needed an inexpensive half chap to wear until I have money to spend on some semi-custom chaps.

Likes: These are affordable half chaps that have stood up to some pretty hard wear so far-I ride 5+ times per week. The styling is nice- Spanish cut tops (so the outside is higher than the inside). I have slightly wide calves (15.25in) but am rather short from knee to ankle. With the stretch leather panel, the size medium fit me perfectly, and the length and cut are flattering for my leg. Some non-custom half chaps I have tried (Dublin, Ariat) are too tall and narrow for my short legs.

Dislikes: Not much. I would have liked if these had a snap at the top of the zipper as well as at the bottom. I found that Ovation also makes a smooth leather half chap and that their "pro" half chaps do have a snap at the top as well. I'm considering buying a pair of the smooth leather chaps so that I'll have two pairs to use for the next year or so.

Quality: The leather is fairly decent quality-but good for the price I paid. So far it's been 3 months and I haven't had any problems with the zipper or snap. I notice that I'm able to wear these over jeans and paddock boots, as well as breeches, and that the stretch leather panel has retained its elasticity so far (my jeans are bulkier than breeches, but the elastic panel will stretch to accommodate this without being loose when I go back to wearing them over breeches).

Summary: Nothing fancy, but solid and serviceable at a pretty low price. Size medium is great for a slightly short rider with a full calf.
