Purchase: Looking to improve on jumping a bit (both for myself and my horse) I decided to pick this book up. It came recommended through a local tack store, though I bought it online from Chapters.
It cost approximately $50.00 Cdn without taxes and shipping.
Written by Linda L. Allen with Dianna R. Dennis. Foreword by David O'Connor, Joe Fargis and William Steinkraus.
Likes: There are so many great exercises in this book that I can't wait to try them all. Since I don't have access to an indoor arena, and the footing isn't good here, that'll be sometime in the late spring.
The binding is done in such a way that you turn to the exercise you're working on and then hang the book over a jump or gate so it's closer to eye level for the rider.
The instructions are clear, with a diagram to show how the exercise should be done.
The exercises all have a pretty even flow to them.. going from extremely easy (even a non jumper could do them) at the beginning of the book to more challenging as you progress.
Dislikes: Some of the diagrams are a bit confusing in the later part of the book, when the exercises are harder. Thankfully, as I said before, the descriptions are good.
I think the problem is that a series of dashed lines are used in the diagram to signify a medium canter, for example. A bolded set of dashed lines is used to signify an extended canter, for example. However.. when you're got a picture of an arena with a zillion dashed lines circling and spiraling around, it's hard to tell exactly where one should be riding.
This is really petty, but I'll still mention it anyway. The book is so well put together but whoever edited it forgot to check the outside back over. In one of the quotes, they spelled the word 'surprise' wrong - it was written as 'suprose'. I'm surprised that it would slip through, considering the quality of the book. It isn't something that would deter me from recommending it though.
Quality: Excellent quality - this is probably the best horse book I've ever bought (and I've bought quite a few)!
The cover is laminated so that arena dust and whatever else you'll encounter in the schooling ring should brush right off. There's even a little hole in the bottom of the pages so that you could even hang it on a hook, if one was available.
Summary: I wish I had gotten this book earlier. I think it's an absolute must for anyone who's into riding. Although the book deals mainly with hunters and jumpers, even a non jumping rider could take away a great deal of information.
The only reason I rated this a 5, is because Horse Tack Review doesn't have a 6!
